The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has started informal talks with club owners, discussing several possibilities, including the cancellation of I-League in a worst-case scenario.
The AIFF needs about two weeks to kickstart the league once restrictions are lifted and approximately three weeks to conclude the remaining four rounds of the I-League. But with India under lockdown till April 14 and word that everyone may have to stay indoors for even longer, talk that the I-League may have seen its last game for the season is gaining ground.
“For now, everything is closed till April 14, and depending on the situation, we will take a call closer to that. Once the restrictions are lifted, we cannot start the league the next day. Teams need to train, travel arrangements need to be made and the grounds – not maintained for some time now – have to be in shape. Our season officially ends on May 31 and we cannot play beyond that,” said I-League CEO Sunando Dhar.
